PRP microneedling—also known as the “vampire facial”—is a treatment I had been curious about for years. Like many of you, I first heard about it when Kim Kardashian shared her experience, making it a viral sensation. Recently I decided to finally take the plunge. Here’s everything you need to know about PRP microneedling, my first experience, and whether it’s worth trying.

What Is PRP Microneedling?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, a component of your blood loaded with growth factors that can boost healing and collagen production. In this treatment, microneedling (a procedure that uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin) is combined with PRP for amplified benefits.

The process begins with a simple blood draw—yes, your own blood is the secret ingredient! They spin it in a machine called a centrifuge, separating the plasma from other components of your blood. The plasma is then applied to your skin during microneedling or injected into targeted areas for deeper penetration.

The Benefits of PRP Microneedling

Here’s why this treatment is gaining so much popularity:

  • Microneedling alone: Stimulates collagen and elastin production, improves skin texture, minimizes fine lines, and reduces the appearance of scars.
  • PRP addition: Enhances the healing process, improves skin tone and texture, reduces hyperpigmentation, and accelerates results.

When combined, PRP and microneedling offer an advanced treatment that addresses multiple skin concerns more effectively than microneedling alone.

My First PRP Microneedling Experience

Before your appointment, here’s a tip: eat a meal and hydrate well beforehand. Since your blood is drawn, it’s essential to avoid feeling lightheaded. I also had a protein bar and a water bottle ready for after the procedure.

Once I arrived, the technician drew my blood and explained the process. Watching them separate the plasma in the centrifuge was fascinating—and a little surreal! They numbed my face with a topical anesthetic.

I chose to target:

  • Hyperpigmentation around my mouth
  • Dark circles under my eyes
  • Pitted acne scars on my cheek

After numbing, they injected the plasma into these areas of concern. If you’re afraid of needles, this treatment might not be for you, as the process does involve injections. However, the discomfort was minimal for me.

What to Expect After PRP Microneedling

  • Day 1: My face was extremely swollen and red, like a bad sunburn. I skipped my skincare routine that night and let my skin rest.
  • Day 2: The swelling was gone, and my face was now pink.
  • Days 3-4: Light peeling began, but nothing too dramatic.
  • Day 5: The results were clear—my skin looked brighter, more even-toned, and plumper. My dark circles were lighter, and the pitted acne scars were less noticeable.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely! Although the recovery requires planning—you’ll want to avoid important events for about 3-4 days—the results were worth it for me. My skin looked refreshed, rejuvenated, and far better than any topical treatment had ever achieved.

Most practitioners recommend 3-4 sessions per year depending on your concerns, so this isn’t a one-and-done procedure. Scheduling can be tricky, especially if you’re busy, but it’s a small sacrifice for glowing skin.

Final Thoughts

PRP microneedling lives up to the hype. If you’re looking for a non-surgical treatment to improve your skin’s texture, tone, and overall appearance, I’d highly recommend it. Just be prepared to coordinate your schedule around the recovery time. I’ll definitely be doing it again—and I can’t wait to see the long-term benefits!
