There’s just something about a fresh set of nails that instantly makes you feel put together. You could be rocking sweats and a messy bun, but if your nails are on point? You’re basically unstoppable. Nails are the ultimate accessory, and the technique you choose can totally level up your vibe.
I don’t do my own nails—I leave it to the pros. Going to a good nail tech is so worth it. Not only do you get beautiful, long-lasting results, but it’s also a chance to unplug and treat yourself. Honestly, getting pampered at the salon feels like a mini reset. It’s part of my “high-maintenance to stay low-maintenance” routine. When your nails are done, you don’t need to try as hard in other areas. Effortless, but polished? Yes, please.
Over the years, I’ve tried a few different techniques—each with its own personality and perks. Here’s my take on the most popular ones, plus the one that currently owns my heart. (Spoiler: it’s Poly Gel)
Gel Manicure
The classic. Gel is the go-to for long-lasting shine and a solid two to three weeks of wear without chips. It’s reliable, looks super clean, and has a gorgeous glossy finish. But if your nails are prone to peeling or breakage, repeated gel use (especially without proper removal) can wear them down.
Pros: Shiny, durable, relatively low-maintenance
Cons: Can weaken nails over time if removed incorrectly
Dip Powder
Dip powder had its big moment during the pandemic, and for good reason. It doesn’t require a UV lamp, adds strength, and can last up to four weeks. It’s great for anyone trying to grow out or protect their nails. That said, it can feel a bit thick, and removal is… a commitment.
Pros: Super durable, ideal for nail biters
Cons: Can look bulky, tricky to remove
Gel-X (Soft Gel Extensions)
These soft gel tips are applied with gel and cured under UV light—giving you that sleek extension look without the harshness of acrylics. They’re comfy, lightweight, and perfect when you want that “wow” factor (weddings, vacations, or just a treat-yourself moment).
Pros: Fast application, lightweight, beautiful finish
Cons: Not as long-lasting as acrylics, can lift if not applied properly
Poly Gel – My Personal Fave!
Let’s talk Poly Gel: the lovechild of gel and acrylics. It’s strong, flexible, and totally customizable. Plus, there’s none of that harsh acrylic smell. Whether you want to build up your natural nails or go full-on with extensions, Poly Gel gives a natural feel without the weight.
I’ve been hooked ever since I tried it. It feels light but holds up beautifully—and with the right nail tech, the finish is chef’s kiss.
Pros: Durable, lightweight, low-odor, customizable
Cons: Takes some skill to apply if you DIY (which I don’t—but I admire the talent!)
Russian Manicure – On My Radar
I haven’t tried the Russian manicure yet, but it’s definitely on my list. It’s all about next-level cuticle work and insanely precise polish application. Think: editorial-level clean. From what I’ve seen, it gives that “your nails but photoshopped” vibe—and I’m so excited to try it. Stay tuned for a full review (and probably a photo dump on IG).
Nails = Instant Upgrade
Nails aren’t just about the polish. They’re about confidence. When your nails are fresh, you carry yourself differently. You move with more intention. You tap your phone like you’ve got somewhere important to be. They’re a little detail that makes a big impact.
So whether you’re a gel loyalist, dip devotee, or a Poly Gel queen like me, find the method that works for you. And if you’re thinking of treating yourself? Book the appointment. Get the good nail tech. You deserve the pampering—and the confidence boost that comes with it.
Because it’s true what they say: it’s high maintenance to stay low maintenance. 💖
Stay polished!
